Two hundred and sixty seven years on West Kent high streets

1759, in West Kent. 1933, at 11 Church Road.

The Berry and Lambert families have practised law in West Kent since 1759. Two centuries later the two firms shared a doorstep, a postcode and a client base. They formally merged on 10 February 2012 under the LLP that Companies House records as OC372351, and adopted the unified Berry & Lamberts trading name in September 2014.

The address has a second history of its own. On 29 May 1933 the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society was founded in the offices of Berry & Berry at 11 Church Road. The Society's first minute book lists this building. Ninety years later, in May 2023, the Society returned to the same address to mark its anniversary.

Today the firm trades from three doors in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Paddock Wood. Twelve partners. Four department heads (Company & Commercial, Private Client, Dispute Resolution, Family Law) plus separate heads for Residential and Commercial Property. Two LawNet awards in two years.

11 Church Road · the original address

The building where the local Law Society began.

On the morning of 29 May 1933 a small group of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge solicitors met in the offices of Berry & Berry on Church Road and constituted the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society. The Society has met without break since.

In May 2023 the Society returned to the same address to mark its ninetieth anniversary. The minute book that opened the meeting in 1933 sat on the same kind of desk in the same kind of room. The address that was the cradle of the local profession is the address Berry & Lamberts gives clients today: 11 Church Road, TN1 1JA, five minutes on foot from Tunbridge Wells mainline, free parking on site.

Frequently asked

Five questions we hear most across the three reception desks.

How long have Berry & Lamberts been in West Kent?

Since 1759. The current firm is the 2012 merger of Berry & Berry LLP and Lamberts Solicitors, two practices whose own lineages reach back 270 years between them. The unified Berry & Lamberts brand was adopted in September 2014. The Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society was founded in the offices of Berry & Berry at 11 Church Road on 29 May 1933, and returned to the same address in May 2023 for its 90th anniversary.

Are the three branches separately staffed, or one team across three doors?

One firm, twelve partners, three doors. Tunbridge Wells (11 Church Road) is the registered head office and the largest branch. Sevenoaks (Hearts of Oak House, Pembroke Road) and Paddock Wood (60 Commercial Road) carry the same departments and the same opening hours. A file opened at one branch can be progressed at any of the three.

Do you publish fee structures for residential conveyancing?

Yes. A free residential conveyancing fee quote is available via the website or by telephone to any branch. The quote is written, itemises the legal fee and the disbursements (searches, Land Registry, ID checks, electronic money transfers), and is honoured at completion. Law Society Conveyancing Quality Scheme accredited.

Are you regulated by the SRA, and are you a Legal Aid firm?

Yes to both. Berry & Lamberts LLP is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under SRA number 567287. The firm is also a Legal Aid franchised firm, regulated by the Legal Aid Agency, and is authorised to offer legal representation at public expense in particular areas of work. Companies House number OC372351, VAT 209 6047 68.

Where do you take instructions from?

West Kent first. The catchment includes Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Paddock Wood, Kings Hill, Tenterden, Cranbrook, Edenbridge and the Weald. Beyond that the firm acts for clients across the South East and all of England and Wales. International matters via referral.
